Similar to the move by Harley Davidson to mass produce motorbikes (the purchase of Harley by Brunswick in the 80s) the surfboard industry moved to cheaper construction of boards from materials such as foam, resin, and fiberglass in the 60s and 70s. The push was to mass produce boards at a lower cost. The decision was predicated on profits vs. art, function, and performance.

Harley eventually recaptured the art of motorcycle making (from Brunswick) and now Noah's Wooden Boats and Surfboards has done the same by engineering a unique board that maximizes the God-created qualities and characteristics of wood to create a truly unique riding experience. Recently, Barry Haun, the curator for the Surfing Heritage Foundation archive, confirmed this move by stating that "wood reacts different than foam materials. Paying attention to the smallest details and adopting technology from the Aerospace Industry, Noah's has engineered hollow core wood surfboards that perfectly choreograph the natural characteristics of wood, glues and finishes to create a unique riding experience.
